● Artist's Note
김도영
“The Territory of Dreams” started at my grandfathers’ backyard when I was a child. The space inspired me, allowing me to interact with all situations which I had experienced. It was my territory where I had kept my strong memories of childhood and has indeed impacted my painting with pure innocence.

The yard was not a desolate space or a blank canvas; but rather an incubator in which wild seeds would spring up as fresh green sprouts, a particular space where trees could cast their rich shadows inside, adding a sense of depth. This inspiration has led me to realize that I could create space and my own world even with one meager thought.
I now try to transfer the memories of the yard, which has so naturally changed with season, into my small canvases. With such meaning, the aim of my work ? “The Territory of Dreams” ? is to show the innocence and freedom as recollected from my own childhood memories of the backyard. I try to express the comfort of the soft ground felt on a child’s bare feet, using natural materials like mud, variety of colors (yellow, pink and white) soil, charcoal powder and Korean traditional paper. Rough strokes of brush are used to create the feeling of nature and uneven soil. However, overall atmosphere is smooth and warm like the feeling of traditional Korean white porcelain, which provides the space for one to imagine freely.

In this quickly changing modern society, I try to instill within a feeling of a mother and her child and express the innocence of the dreams originated from the childhood’s backyard experience.
